Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano, took the drastic measure of dethroning Sanusi in 2020, accusing him of failing to follow orders and displaying disloyalty.
Governor Abba Yusuf has signed a bill into law, effectively dismantling the Emirate Council and removing the five Emirs appointed by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The move also clears the way for Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former Emir of Kano, to reclaim his throne, which he lost in 2020.
The repealed law, enacted by Ganduje in 2019, had created five new Emirates and installed new Emirs, including Sanusi's successor, Aminu Ado Bayero. However, the new law dissolves all offices created under the previous law, and district heads will revert to their original positions.
The Commissioner for Local Government will oversee the transition, including the management of assets and liabilities, and the affected Emirs have been ordered to hand over properties to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
